Welcome Autumn!
It's a beautiful brisk morning in Maine and the weather makes me feel like this:
Yup. Yesterday Michael asked for pot roast as Sunday night dinner. The leaves are turning, we're prepping the basement for firewood, nearby farms and orchards are bursting with their harvests... I love this time of year.

Welcome birds!
Last month the Conservation Commission hosted a "Build a Bird or Bat House" event. I hung the one I made and have been waiting patiently to see signs of new tenants.

A splash of color
Here's a shot of the office. I spend a chunk of each day in the warehouse, but this is my workspace and computer. The desk is kind of boring and white, but the wall of products and neon Husqvarna clock spices it up a little!

Making Maple Syrup in Southern Maine
We were at town hall Thursday night for the Winter Speaker Series session about Making Maple Syrup in Southern Maine. It was great to have local sugar makers talk to us about the history of the craft in our area and how to experiment with small scale in-home production. During the presentation it was obvious that despite the enormous amount of work, the speakers all had a deep and abiding affection for it. They were not only informative and engaging, they were honest about the pitfalls in order for us to benefit from their mistakes.
When we were kids, we made maple syrup one or two winters -- there were some BIG maples at the ol' homestead in East Derry. Thursday's talk helped me understand the things we did right, and what we did wrong. I don't know if it will be this winter, but I'd like to try it again! We've got a wood stove, lots of maple trees -- and we love pancakes!

Winter in Maine
We're in the middle of a snow storm that started this morning and is predicted to go until tomorrow around noon. I worked until around 12:30… then came home and started a fire. After that I plowed the driveway for the first time e-v-e-r. Then I went snowshoeing. Not a bad winter's day!

Pick Your Own
I hopped out of bed this morning and slipped over to the berry farm. Rolling onto the field at 6:30, there were already a couple dozen cars parked. The picking was amazing -- I had this huge tray filled in 20-25 minutes. They're delicious... I'll be going back for more, later in the week!
